Description

In an ongoing commission project I've been tasked to visualize a variety of fantasy races based on various elements like fire, water, stone. Looks like this engineer found the culprit inside a broken machine.

Other parts of this series:
(2), (3), (4), Reference Sheet

This is probably my favorite piece in this series. She has a lot of loving detail put into her face and her clothing, making her much more than just Fantasy Monster #12. She's very clearly engrossed in her task, to the point of distraction, giving us a look at her as an individual rather than a dramatic pose.

My main criticisms here are of her props. The screw in her mouth seems unnecessary, and sticks out like a sore thumb. It draws attention to the fact that - judging from the tones on the reference sheet - she's wearing lipstick, which seems a bit odd. The device held in her right hand is also unpleasantly blocky and crude-looking, which is a jarring departure from the grace of the rest of the piece. It also doesn't look like it would fit properly in her hand when fully assembled.

The detail put into her skin, however, is simply superb. It's very common to do a simple wash and shading for skin tones, but her skin is fully developed on her face, neck, and hands. Similarly, the grease smudges on her clothing go a long way towards giving her a character and presence that simply pop off the page.
